Duda Davis

Duda and Davis both hitting in minor-league game

1:10 pm: Ike Davis is batting in Friday’s minor-league game.

11:18 am: Lucas Duda was told he will be the designated hitter in a minor-league game Friday in St. Lucie (ESPN NY, Mar. 14).

He has not played in a game since injuring his left hamstring on March 3.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

What a mess. In the event Ike doesn’t bet back soon enough, to get in enough at bats and be up to speed for Opening Day, it will resolve the first base situation by default, I guess. Josh Satin is clearly half the platoon, set to get most of the at bats this year against left-handed pitching. Duda will be his partner, facing righties, assuming Davis is delayed. The real fun will begin when Ike is ready. Then what?

Why not give the job to Eric Campbell? He's had a good camp so far. Plus, has hit very well in AAA.

Cut Ike, put that 5 mm towards Morales. Trade for Franklin to play short. Suddenly the Mets become better.

Image of Ike on the field laughing in a T-shirt that says "Mets Baseball" is iconic!

Something tells me Ike will somehow be healthy before opening day and be the Mets starting 1B. Ike's terrible so his chances of starting for this team only improve with him not playing. As long as he's not out there stinking it up there's hope for the Mets FO to point to towards him suddenly turning back the clock a couple years. Ike has competition in Duda but he hasn't been able to get on the field either and even when he does he's not gonna light the world on fire. So Ike wouldn't have the latitude Tejada has to go out there and have more errors than hits and still be guaranteed to start. It wouldn't shock me if Ike heard TC talk about getting Ike 100ABs or whatever in ST and said forget that my calf hurts. Especially since I'm sure he harbors ill feelings towards how the team openly talked about trying to trade him for the majority of the offseason. That kind of a sample would've been a no win situation for Ike. Even if he was great no one even himself would've taken it too seriously as it was only ST but if he stunk up the joint that very well could've lead to his release and diminished his value even further in finding a new team to take a chance on him.

So the mets really are gonna have a platoon at 1B? What B#####it. Just sign a switch hitter like Morales if thats the case. OR make Flores platoon not Satin! Satin is a good bench player and thats all. He's not  1B, he hits like a average 2B or SS. If Flores is the everyday SS or a guy like Nick Franklin i won't be that upset about about it, because at least there run producers. We want to score runs right? We want to win 90 games right? Well just imagine Terry possibly throwing a lineup out against lefties that consists of EY, Tejada and Satin. Your really gonna score alot of runs with that lineup. Imean give me a break.

I'm just glad to finally see somebody refer to what Duda has as an "injury" as opposed to never-ending "tightness."

On the bright side, even though they've refused to officially call it a strain, at least they've been holding Duda out instead of telling him "just try not to run hard in a baseball game"' like they did with Wright.

Can someone give Dom Smith some sort of undetectable aging drug that will immediately make him 24 and ready?

i do not worry about Duda playing and Ike not. Duda the more he plays the more we know he is far from the answer. what can either show anybody that can make a fan comfortable with either one.

Ike sucks. I'm sick of hearing about this bum. Release him already, Sandy should have traded him for a bag of balls. Too late for that now....

What are the odds that if Ike isn't ready by OD that the FO will release him? You know they don't wanna foot the bill!

Why exactly is Satin guaranteed playing time? His numbers this year vs lefties aren't going to be anything special.

Also, I don't really see Morales as a significant improvement at 1B.

Ike or Duda for the bench... I guess?

I've noticed that all of sudden everyone hates tejeda and ike, when all off season, a lot of you were screaming to give these guys a shot.  I was getting trashed for saying we should sign morales and drew.  I said all along these 2 guys are bums and we need real major leaguers.

MAKE UP MINDS METS FANS!!!! you all remind me of the dysfunctional group thats running this team can't make up there minds.

what a joke....1B platoon consists of 2 guys who cant hit or stay healthy and Satin who is a weak singles hitter who really belongs in the minor leagues. Where are all the promises that SA made to improve the offense and have a much different roster this year. And what about SS.....can the Mets really be content with Tejada???  SA is a smart guy.......it must be the Wilpons holding him back

I had a feeling, all along, that the only thing that would resolve the first base debate would be the disabled list.

Man....thank God for the football Giants, the NFL in general, and football free agency. If I had to depend on the Mets for something to be interested in I probably would have hung myself by now. This 2014 mets team, and its never ending bunch of pathetic story lines, probably could not be more boring if it tried.

The sad part is, this was all brought about by Ike with his workout routine.  How his calves are that sore that he misses practices for almost 2 weeks is beyond me.  These "athletes" are supposed to be working out in the offseason getting their bodies conditioned and ready for the regular season.  They shouldn't have "soreness" issues from lifting weights at camp.  Soreness, if that's truly what is ailing him, is brought about by working out either too hard or being out of shape to begin with.  Either way, this is Ike's own stupidity.  A trade seems likely.  Too bad the Mets will only get back a bucket of balls.  Quite a sad situation - the sky was the limit until that freak injury when he collided with David Wright in Colorado a few years back.  He's shown potential with his 30HR season, but off the field issues seem to be dooming Ike.  Whether it be his partying that the Mets were concerned over a few years ago, his workout regiment, or his bickering about how he is portrayed after a one on one interview with a writer.  This is just not working out...

What a mess indeed, Matt. But this is the Mets. We should not expect anything less.

Is there any chance of Flores being out opening day first baseman? It seems like everyone says his bat is major league ready but he doesn't have the quickness to be a middle infielder. It seems like this is the perfect opportunity for Flores to be playing everyday. He has played there in the minors a bit. I would hate to see Satin being the starter and Flores in AAA.

I think they'll need those 40-man spots for a SS and two bullpen arms.  But if there are injuries, I could see him getting a call during the season.  His flexibility (1B/3B/LF/RF) certainly helps him.  But at 1B, he's behind Lutz who is already on the 40.  This is his final minor league year before free agency so there's no reason to hold him down.  If we don't use him, he's gone.  If nothing else, I'd expect a September call-up as a nice gesture.  But possibly a quick DFA afterwards to make room for the legion that is to be protected.   I'd like to see him make it after all these years, even if its just a cup of coffee.

@ac0814 If that were to happen, which it obviously won't, Lagares, who in the real world probably won't even be a starter, definitely wouldn't lead off. With Morales and Franklin lengthening the lineup CY would lead off, d'Arnaud would bump up to 6 and Lagares would hit 8th, or 9th if TC were serious about the pitcher hitting 8th which I doubt he was.

BringBackDaveTelghe

Pretty sure his contract is guaranteed at this point once it was renewed.

Pete Brilvitch

@BringBackDaveTelghe I agree. He will get exposed with a significant number of ABs. He also has limited power which is not good for a position and team that need power desperately.

Dana Smith

@Olerud42 The fact that no one has signed him is all the indication you need about Morales. If nobody else wants him, then  why should the Mets?

helloboy
helloboy

@Olerud42  He would cost too much.  Otherwise, this is something crazy.  Morales is a solid major league hitter.  He would be one of the better hitting 1B in the game, though he is more suited for DH.

Just because a guy doesn't hit over 20 bombs doesn't mean he's weak.  Keith wasn't weak.  He never hit 20 bombs.  Never!  Satin hit 38, 39, and 40 doubles his last 3 full minor league seasons.  Those are 5-month seasons!  That is not a singles hitter.  Satin's gap power plays better at Citi than Davis/Duda warning track power.  Line drives over fly balls.

Mike Scalera
Mike Scalera

@Metsnow  SA is definitely a smart guy, which makes me think that the answer is more likely that he knows something the average Mets fan doesn't (or at least, won't acknowledge).  For example, a sober assessment of where the team is on the win curve may well counsel against signing Drew:  giving up the money and draft pick to add a 3 WAR player (at best) to an 87-win team makes a lot more sense than doing so to add the same player to a 77-win team.  And he may have concluded that signing a guy like Morales, who hasn't put up more than a league-average 1b OPS since 2010 and is a butcher in the field, makes no sense in the NL, where you can't hide him at DH.  (According to the defensive metrics, they could sit a half-full Gatorade cooler at 1b and it would stop more ground balls than Morales.)

Smart spending is good.  Spending just for the sake of spending is not.  See, e.g., 2013 Blue Jays, 2012 Marlins, etc.

Now, trading for a young, under-control SS who could contribute for years to come is a different story...

@D. Brizz Seriously, I don't get it.. Shouldn't athletes know how to condition themselves? I know that if I haven't worked out in a while, I will be sore for about a week after... even with just light exercise.. and if I push it with heavy exercise after a big lay off, forget it! I'll probably be sore for 2 weeks and that's risking injury.

He can't play everyday.. His bat hasn't been proven at the ML level yet.

@BringBackDaveTelghe  it is not. this was covered several times. Only some 600K and change is if he gets cut before the end of ST.

Dana Smith

@Pete Brilvitch @BringBackDaveTelghePower is just a displacement for good situational hitting. We shouldn't be worried about Satin, he will be fine. What we need are for guys to move runners, drive in guys from 3rd with less than 2 outs and hit with RISP. You dont need homeruns to win baseball games.

Olerud42
Olerud42

@helloboy @Olerud42  If he gives back all of his value on defense, then what difference does it make how good he hits?

Dana Smith

@Jim Alderson Not to mention Satin is like a .290 career hitter in the minors. He gets on base. He doesnt kill rallies. he's got a good eye at the plate. You dont need to hit homeruns to win baseball games.

@Mike Dell Italia @nymetsruleMorales cannot play a passable first base. Sacrificing more defense is not the answer. plus why add ANOTHER first basemen? We already have like 20 in the organization.
