Sunday’s pitching preview: Hefner vs. Gonzalez

Jeremy Hefner will start for the Mets today.

Hefner has rejoined the rotation as the sixth man, and he’s making his seventh start of the season for the Mets today. He is 2-3 with a 5.13 ERA in those starts, but he’s walked just six batters in 33 1/3 innings in that role. Two of those six starts have come against Washington and he’s pitched well despite losing those two starts, having allowed five earned runs in 12 innings against them this season.

Gio Gonzalez (15-6, 3.29 ERA) will start for the Nationals today.

Gonzalez has turned it on after struggling towards the end of July and the early part of August, winning his last two starts and allowing only five earned runs in 15 2/3 innings over that span. The Mets roughed Gonzalez up for six run in 3 1/3 innings on July 19. He has made two starts against New York this season, going 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA in 10 1/3 innings.
