Sunday’s pitching matchup: Aaron Laffey vs. Jose Fernandez

Aaron Laffey (4-6, 4.56 ERA in 2012) will start for the Mets.

Laffey was originally slated for a bullpen role, but is being transitioned into a starting pitcher in the wake of injuries to both Shaun Marcum and Johan Santana. Laffey struggled as a starting pitcher with the Blue Jays last season, going 4-6 with a 4.81 ERA in 16 starts and allowing 120 baserunners in only 86 innings. In 65 starts in his career, Laffey is 21-25 with a 4.46 ERA in 363 1/3 innings – he is making his first career appearance against the Marlins today.

Jose Fernandez (14-1, 1.75 ERA at Single-A Jupiter in 2012) will start for the Marlins.

Fernandez, 20, is a phenom in the Marlins organization, making the long jump from the Florida State League in 2012 to the Major Leagues in 2013. He dominated while with Single-A Jupiter in 2012, striking out 154 batters with 35 walks in 138 innings while holding opponents to a .191 average.
