Recap: David Wright picks up two hits, drives in one in Team USA loss

David Wright WBC polaroid 1Last night at Chase Field, David Wright went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Team USA’s 5-2 loss to Team Mexico.

Wright grounded into a double play in the second, delivered a two-out, RBI single in the fourth to plate the Americans’ first run, then picked up his second hit of the game in the sixth.

The run-scoring single was a pitch down-and-in that Wright put an inside-out swing on and served the other way with authority. Defensively, he made a few sparkling plays, one of which came in the third that took a double away from Luis Cruz. Wright made the pick up on his backhand and executed a perfect off balance throw to Brandon Phillips at second to get the lead runner.

Mechanically, I noticed was that Wright’s hands seem to be higher than they were at the beginning of last season. Overall, his stance looks more upright and similar to when he first broke into the league, as opposed to the more crouched, open approach he featuring at the onset of 2012.

Team USA will take on Team Italy tonight at 9:00 pm ET. The game can be seen on MLB Network.
