Monday’s pitching preview: McHugh vs. Kelly

Collin McHugh (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for the Mets today.

Collin McHugh was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make today’s start. McHugh allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings against Rochester in his last start for the Bisons. He was brilliant in his big league debut for the Mets when he allowed just two hits with a walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings on August 23. His nine strikeouts are the second most by a Met making his debut – Matt Harvey struck out 11 in his debut on July 26.

Joe Kelly (4-6, 3.61 ERA) will start for the Cardinals today.

Kelly got battered for five runs in five innings against the Pirates in his last start. Kelly struggled in six starts in August, going 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 30 2/3 innings. Kelly is making his first career start against the Mets today.

When McHugh made his big league debut last month, his curveball really stood out. He had great 12-6 action on that pitch and it had heavy movement towards each corner of the plate. He also showed a lot of poise and had great mound presence for someone making his debut. Like Dillon Gee, McHugh needs command of all four of his pitches to be successful. He has had an outstanding season between the Minor Leagues and the Major Leagues this season – if he can prove to be as solid as he’s been this year, it’s icing on the cake for their pitching depth going forward.
