Need to Know: The Mets fought back, down three runs, to tie the game in the ninth, sparked by Daniel Murphy‘s two-run home run. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg held out closer Jonathan Papelbon rather than use him for a third straight day. …

In the 11th, Chris Young opened with an infield single. … Zack Wheeler‘s pinch-hit, sacrifice bunt moved Young to second. … Juan Lagares drew an intentional walk and Anthony Recker loaded with the bases with another infield hit. … Tejada drove in the winning run with a one-out single. It was his Tejada’s third career walk-off RBI.

In a rare outing, Cole Hamels shut down the Mets, giving up just one run in seven innings, while striking out 10 batters.

The Mets had been 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position prior to the ninth-inning rally.

Chris Young snapped an 0-for-18 drought with a ninth-inning double. He scored the tying run.

The Phillies scored three runs on eight hits against Jon Niese, who threw 97 pitches in six innings, raising his ERA to 2.17.

Terry Collins fell to 3-for-5 on replay challenges with an unsuccessful review in the seventh inning.

The Mets begin a four-game, home-and-away series against the Yankees on Monday at Yankee Stadium. Bartolo Colon will face Hiroki Kuroda at 7:10 pm ET in the Bronx.

Get rid of him.. he lost the game earlier when he did not throw out the runner at home. I want a real shortstop , who can think correctly and hit

Sigh. we need EYJ in there.  His speed is what makes things go.  It just seems to add more life to them. I do not know why and I am not happy about it, but i think it is a must after seeing them the past 10 games. I admit to believing that i was wrong.

Depending on who else is in the lineup, i would go (and i do not care that he is not a power bat, he hits and i want him in position to drive in runs and not table-set so Murph is my cleanup guy)

EYJ

Granderson

Wright

Murphy

Duda/Campbell

Lagares

Flores

TDA (or Recker)

Our lineup needs help.  It is just not deep enough.  I want more speed though in 1 and I want Muprhy in a position to drive in runs.  He is the most consistent hitter I have and he is getting extra base hits. I want him driving people in. I am losing runs with him at the 2 spot, ideal or not.

Now if their was only a way we could send Terry down to the minors with the next guy when he's demoted, we might just get somewhere!!!

Amazing comment during Sunday's game: The Mets have had the lead in 30 of 36 games. Now, no one expects anyone to win every game in which they have a lead, but with a couple more real hitters and a reliable bullpen, this team could be half decent.

THE METS HAVE LOST SO MUCH   MONEY THE LAST FIVE YEARS, THAT LOSING 7 MILLIONS MORE TO GET RID OF C.YOUNG, IT WOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERENT.

I really don't understand all the HATE for Tejada.  I agree we need an upgrade at the shortstop position, but I'd save my HATE for the 7-10 mil players who strike out on 3 pitches almost every time up.  I'd save my Upgrades for a BullPen that has a chance of holding leads in dependable roles.

What Tejada does do well, and often, is See ALOT of pitches per at bat and make alot of contact (even if it's weak).  IMHO, if he HAS to be in the lineup, he should be batting 2nd where he can give your leadoff hitter more chances to steal (or hit and run) and give the middle of your lineup a better and longer look at what the pitcher has on a given day.

For example:  1) EYJ 2)Tejada 3)Murphy 4)Wright 5) Duda...  Again, if you HAVE to have Tejada in the lineup.

If I remember correctly he was batting 2nd for a good portion of 2012, where he batted around .300 most of the year and had a respectable OBP.

He REALLY STUNK last year, and he's off to a bad start this year, but he's young, he's cheap, he's a solid defender and our money is better spent upgrading the bullpen.  That's my opinion, and I understand Haters gotta Hate, but it seems silly to me.

Here's the scoop people, the Mets and Tejada got lucky tonight and the only reason Tejada gets that hit when he did is by doing exactly the opposite of what the Mets hitting philosophy has been, and that is Tejada swung at the first strike down the middle versus laying back watching a strike and then falling behind in the count and being left to swing at almost strikes or balls that are off the plate out of the zone.  The Mets are leaving way to many people on base and it's been their pattern of massive numbers of Ks at the plate with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs but it starts with letting that first strike go by down the middle and then falling behind in the count--change this up.

Can we please stop playing Chris Young! The guy is garbage. How did we give him this contract. Thank god it's a one year deal.

Can't wait for super 2 cutoff so we can bring the young guys in and do a clean-out.

EY leads off and the Mets win again.  I don't understand it, but it has to be taken into consideration.  Again.

Would love to see the Mets give Heath Bell and/or Carlos Marmol some consideration, but only on minor league deals. Adds some more veteran depth, as its pretty clear Farnsworth and Valverde have worn out their welcome with the Mets. More depth is always nice, although I would obviously prefer to see internal options, like Black, Walters and Carreno, brought up, but I'm pretty convinced the Mets would rather waste their organizational talent at the minor league level. I mean, who wants to PAY for talent when you can let the MLB club suffer for the sake of delaying arbitration instead?

I didn;t see the Captain out there again during the walk off celebration

Need to keep EY in the lineup but not in the dispense of Lagares. Keep Lagares in center and EY in left. CY can be rotated. We need EY's speed in the lineup. Also Familia is looking really good. Move Mejia to bullpen and start Montero. DeGrom or Black can come up in the bullpen as well. Cut Valverde and Farnsworth.

Tejada had the right approach in that at bat for once. Glad he came through.

Nothing like a walk-off hit by Tejada to gag the haters. Good for him. Great execution by Wheeler (another target by the same bunch of malcontents) . Oh, and nice end-of-game managing by TC.

I was there today. What a brutal offense through the first 8 innings. Sun was a killer today for the fans. Let's Go Mets!

@stemog  Yep. And considering how low the Mets payroll is, I don't see why this isn't possible next off-season.

@dickeydeep  Tejada gets a game winning hit and you are in on him?  he is still hitting .195 and is terrible.  He is a .200 hitter dude.  That is who he is. he can only be a backup or he gets exposed.

gonymets

@Not4Nutten I agree, I was happy for him, because everyone seems to HATE him.  I hope he does it again against the damn Yankees!   Wouldn't that be nice!

@eric88  It was great... you should watch the recap he was right behind Tejada.

@metsfan91 Your EY suggestion instead of CY is a good one.  EY does seem to be something of a spark plug for our not-too-great team.

He doesn't get a lot of respect but he makes things happen. Speed is such variable in this game.

I never understood why people who see things as they are and express their opinions are considered "haters". Pretty childish if you ask me.

@hankypanky  I am not sure how one play changes people's opinions. This is baseball after all.

@Steven Matregrano  I agree that it makes sense to play EYJ every game.  BUT, Lagares NEEDS to play everyday.  He's been the best player on the Mets this season.  And Sandy, like an idiot, gave a lot of money to Granderson and Chris Young, so I don't see how this happens.

dv92
dv92

@Steven Matregrano  Yeah honestly I would have to agree. EY might not be the best hitter, but he has energy that sparks this team. Seems like almost every time I see him he's on base stealing or scoring runs.

gonymets

@Joe Wenzel YES!  I don't get this extreme moneyball passive batting.  It's been taken to such an extreme that it's got to mess up a lot of hitters, it seems to me.

What's even worse is that after they get strikes they don't even attempt to protect the plate.

@Victor Triguero @hankypanky  Once again I agree with you Vic. I don't understand the hate on Wheels or the Captain either. And yes... Tejada is still garbage. Clutch hit today but he still belongs in Vegas.

gonymets

@rico @hankypankyYES - he's still one of our Mets, having a rough time - and good for him today!  A most unlikely hero that came through when we needed it - so why HATE him so?

dv92
dv92

@rico @hankypanky  Believe me i'm not a negative fan at all. I'm happy for Tejada that he got the game winning hit. I'm happy for the Mets despite of the the loosing streak. The point is I don't believe Tejada is our starting SS. If we had Jose Abreu at first... Then yes, Tejada is a good SS. This team lacks offensive production, especially at short. He doesn't belong starting IMO. With that being said that was a great comeback and i'm happy for the team.

rico

@hankypanky  Tejada gets the game winning single, as clutch as you can get.

I am not a huge fan of his but damn you guys are tough.  A guy gets a hit like that I'd think feral fans like you could give him one day grace period before you re-declare him garbage.

hankypanky
hankypanky

Absolutely. Tejada belongs in Vegas. As of this moment, he's all there is.

dv92
dv92

@Steven Matregrano @dv92  Exactly. His speed is such an asset for us... I hate to bring up Jose but he was the same way (although 10x better than EY obviously). He would get on, steal and score runs. EY is no Jose by any stretch, but he's pretty much the closest thing we have in terms of speed and scoring.
