Game Recap: Mets 5, Nationals 2

The Mets (20-22) snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Nationals (22-20) with a 5-2 win in Washington D.C. on Saturday afternoon >> Read a full recap and boxscore at SNY.TV.

Need to know: Bartolo Colon won his second straight game and was stellar pitching eight strong innings striking out five and giving up only five hits and two runs. Colon threw 105 pitches and gave way to Jenryy Mejia in the ninth, who picked up his first save.  Colon improves to 3-5 on the season with a 5.34 ERA.

The Mets got off to a quick start in the first as Eric Campbell’s two-run single scored Daniel Murphy and David Wright. Juan Lagares added an RBI single for a 3-0 first inning lead before Colon even took the mound.

The Mets tacked on two more in the third as Lagares smacked his second home run of the season — this one a two-run shot — off Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez.

Colon did the rest as he went eight innings with little stress. He gave up a two-run homer to Ian Desmond in the fourth, but settled down to go eight innings, his longest stint of the season.

Lagares showed power with his second home run and had two hits and now has 14 RBIs on the season. Campbell also has two hits and is a cool 5 of 11 — .455 average — since making his season debut on May 10.

Gonzalez was battered in three innings for the Nationals giving up seven hits and five runs in three innings to fall to 3-4 on the season.

The Mets continue their three-game series with the Nationals on Sunday  with Zach Wheeler (1-3, 4.53 ERA) going against the Nats’ Jordan Zimmerman (2-1, 3.59) in Washington D.C.

The next time you go to Citi yell out "Sit Terry Collins!" and maybe he'll stop sitting the best players unless Sandyman tells him to play the high roller guys that they knew were mistakes to save face.

Did I read this correctly? The Mets held Lagares out because they didn't like his approach at the plate. Wasn't he hitting .300? They should pull David because they don't like his approach if they are going to pull Lagares. "Hold it. Time out Lagares. We'd rather have you look at third strikes and hit ,180 like Grandy". Geez!

wasn't it a pure relief to see yesterdays lineup before the game???....no granderson (automatic out)....no d'arnaud (automatic out)..and a real centerfielder in the game...NOW...WASN'T THAT PURE RELIEF???

hey met fans...suppose you won a 32 MILLION DOLLAR LOTTERY....would you hire "resident genius" sandy alderson to invest your money???....just think...he would buy 15 MILLION  WORTH OF GRANDERSON...(actual value about 3 million)....HE WOULD ALSO SPEND 7 MILLION ON CHRIS YOUNG  (worth about 2 million) AND FINALLY 10 MILLION OF YOUR MONEY WOULD BE SPENT ON COLON (valued at about 6 million)...SO YOUR 32 MILLION WOULD HAVE A RESIDUAL VALUE OF ABOUT 11 MILLION AFTER LESS THAN 2 MONTHS!!!!.....now..how do you thinks the dumb wilpons feel...BECAUSE THIER MONEY WAS REAL!!!

This team needs to win around pitching and defense,  CY, Jlag and Grandy is the best defensive outfield in the league.  Duda is adequate and Murphy is getting better,  Wright is Wright.  And Travis is ok behind the dish.  Get a shortstop and go with your pitching.  See if you can get a bat for some of the pitching and go with Mejia as the closer.  Use your arms in AAA for the bullpen.  Bring up Thor and Harvey comes back in August.

Harvey

Wheeler

Syndegaard

Colon

Gee

Niese

Montero

Degrom

That is some staff.

A shortstop and a bat.  That is all we are asking for.  That is what I find most frustrating!!

Told y'all that Jenrry was a closer.

Flores and lagares should be playing every day. Having flores batting eighth will also help the seventh hitter to see better pitches because he is more feared than tejada. Campbell should also be in the lineup everyday until he stops hitting. Put him in LF tomorrow than back at first, he can give Murphy a day off atv second or wright a day off at third. In baseball you need to ride the hot hands until it's no longer warm. The dude was batting .355 at AAA and is 5 for 11 up here. No excuse to sit him. Enough with this bogus loyalty to players who don't deserve the playing time. If lagares is too much of a free swinger for Collins then let campbell continue to hit I'm front of him so if he is on base he will get better pitches to hit. But i like him leading off too. Tomorrows lineup should be

Lagares

Murphy

Wright

Granderson

Campbell

Duda

Recker

Flores

I honestly like that lineup everyday perfect right left balance

I'm generally very tolerant of TC, I think he gets the best out of his players... but there is really no excuse not to play lagares every single day.

This was probably covered already as I'm way late to the party but Colon did not win his 2nd straight game today. His last start before this he got smacked around for 7R and did not get a win. His last win before today was 4 starts ago.

Has anyone thought that they may be showcasing EYjr?  The outfield should be CY, Jlag and Grandy.  CY and Grandy will hit by the end of the year.  I am ok with Duda at first but if Soup excels play him there,  Murphy and Wright stay.  No one is talking about catcher?  Travis has been a bust so far but he is young and has talent.  The bullpen will come together.  AAA is loaded with talent.  Backman?  Hired and fired by Dbacks for his off the field problems.  Look at who is on this team?  Is Backman going to relate to the personnel on this team?  I say Backman only if you are bringing half of his AAA team with him  like Davey did in the early 80's.  Otherwise no way.  We are stuck with TC and Grandy.  make a trade for a bat and put someone between Wright  and Grandy.  Let CY lead off.  Forget EY jr he is a pinchrunner and that is about it.  Cant field and cant hit.

Vegas wins again. No matter who is in the lineup with all the changes, Wally keeps winning. 31-11 for the season. Puello 2-3,  2 Rs, 2 SBs out of leadoff spot. Thornton and Black combine to shut things down in a 6-4 win. Thornton 10 pitches, 9 strikes, 2 K. Black goes 1-2-3 in the ninth. The bullpen may not be so crappy since they are getting wise and going with young arms instead of crusty, broken down has-beens.

I know this is WAY too small a sample size, but...does anyone else see that Campbell is a better natural hitter than Duda?  He has a much better and more compact swing...

Thank you Matt for being real. Terry is a nice guy but he is not the right guy for this role, sad but true. Sandy needs to find another role for him within the organization and promote Wally or Tim T and let Wally be his bench coach. Lagares needs to be in CF everyday with Granderson in LF and CY in right, this gives you the best defensive OF in baseball. Use EY as 4th OF, PH, PR and spot starter at 2B. I still think they should get Franklin from Seattle, he is a switch hitter and hit 12 HRs last year in 300 ABs as a rookie, he is currently tearing up AAA and was a former 1st rounder. No one seems to feel that Flores is the guy so let him stay in AAA and play everyday and use him as trade chip later. I think could be everyday guy but at the very least, strict platoon with Duda and PH every chance you can give him. The biggest weakness that has cost them the most ball games this year is the closer role, 8 blown saves if converted to wins puts this weak hitting team in 1st place, Atlanta has not hit either but is getting great pitching and has an elite closer. With a few fixes and better leadership this team can win 90!

@Ed Renner You could tell also how DÁrnaud is completely mystified at the plate. He had been taking balls right down the middle of the plate as well as some other players. I think these guys should tell them to stuff their strike hunting.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@Ed Renner I knew it. I said in previous posts that the call came from Sandy because Lagares was not following their hitting approach. Lagares gave them the big F U yesterday.

@melmet  this is the reason Mets fans know Wilpon's are stupid and will   continue to be stupid as long as they own the Mets.

New York needs new owners with money.......Opra Winfrey should buy the team.

@philsdad  Dear Phil's Dad.  While I am also giddy about the Mets pitching upside I think your analysis of the position players approaches delusional.

We do not have a single starter, who at their current salary, would be starting for any other national League team...maybe Lagares.

Not4Nutten
Not4Nutten

That's Wright, lets like Terry blame our bad season on Tejada, take real good look at the other so called everyday players half of them would. Not be playing on other teams!

Ed Renner

@philsdad

Hello Phils Dad. Most experts feel that it would be too dangerous to bring Harvey back this year. I go with their expertise over your analysis. We all want him back, even if he is dumber than nails. But why risk it. Jlag? Really? Jlag? Lame. Travis is OK? He can't hit. Get a bat. So true. Do you think any good bat wants to come here so the Mets and Hudgens can screw him up with their approach?

melmet
melmet

@philsdad ""grandy will hit by the end of the year""....you say.. WHICH YEAR??....the "investment" of 60 MILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS...on the likes of Curtis granderson will prove to be the most idiotic waste of money in met history...and we certainly have many precedents for stupidity in met land.

gmoney
gmoney

@philsdad  Nope, nobody wants EY for anyone of value anyway, look at his career numbers outside of Coors, they are terrible. He Ks too much for a guy with his lack of power. Some steals is all he is good for. He's not a starting corner OF on a good team, and he shouldn't be playing everyday here.

thomas
thomas

@Andrew Sodergren  I'm starting to wonder if this team might actually have a shot in the second half -- if Terry doesn't put them too far behind in the first half.

blaze
blaze

I'm also getting tired of seeing Duda, he has done nothing to justify being given the first base job, put Campbell in and see what he has, the guy has hit everywhere he has played

melmet
melmet

@thomas yes!!...Campbell MAKES CONTACT every time he swings...DUDA...makes contact   less than half the time...and CURTIS GRANDERSON virtually never makes contact with anything he swings at!!...

gmoney
gmoney

@thomas  He provides something that this team sorely lacks. Contact ability plus he can take a walk. It's a lost art. Duda needs to start hitting or he could be sitting a lot for Campbell. If Campbell can play the OF at all he may actually be better than Chris or Eric Young. It is only 11 at bats, but you can tell he belongs.

crafalko17

@thomas Certainly a swing with less holes in it. He's looked great so far. Will probably spell Wright a day coming soon.

@semperfi  How about we let Wally coach vs. rhp and Teufel vs. lhp? Platoon coaches! Just kidding.

@semperfi I agree with your thought's about Terry moving forward, but I think his record the past few years is probably slightly better then the talent he had to manage

@kefhrny17  Young is on a one year deal.  next year he is gone.  we need to see if Puelo can take LF

mrmet4mvp
mrmet4mvp

@Mark Phelan @philsdad  That's a huge exaggeration.  Wright (even in his slump), Murphy, and Lagares would be starting on almost any other team in MLB (with a few exceptions). Murph is a top-3 2B in baseball right now.  But Wright is still having a below-average year and the team is too stupid to play Lagares every day; these guys can't balance out the huge deficit from the other players in the lineup.  If Granderson and Young were also hitting, and Lagares was playing every day, the team could probably overcome the replacement-level (or lower) production they're getting from 1B, SS, and C.

@Leif Granlind Flores is 22 years old. How can he be rated anything at this point? You would have waived Sandy Koufax after his first two seasons.

Scott Bruckenstein

Give Flores a chance to see if he's overrated, we know Tejada is awful

Mark Phelan

@melmet @philsdad  Mel, we must be wrong about Grandy, Francessa touted the sign and promised everything would be just fine!

philsdad

@Leif Granlind he was the highest ranked prospect the Mets had and was traded for two Cy Young Award winners.  Scouts must have seen something,  But he has looked really bad at the this level.

philsdad
philsdad

@gmoney  I was merely suggesting they may trade EYjr and that is why he is playing.   EYjr should not be playing on this team or any other but a sucker might bite if he is hitting 250 and leading the league in stolen bases.

melmet

@nagel100 @kefhrny17  yes!!...thankfully "resident genius" SANDY ALDERSON only wasted 7 million on young for one year (hitting 210 presently) ....but that didn't stop "RESIDENT GENIUS"  sandy alderson from making the most mind numbingly stupid acquisition on the planet by giving GRANDERSON 60 MILLION....just think...we only have to watch "grandy" strike out about 800 MORE TIMES UNTILL HE'S GONE.

Leif Granlind
Leif Granlind

Yeah, I think he suffers from the I-am-a-good-ballplayer-but-can't-stand-the-pressure-of-playing-in-New-York-syndrome.

philsdad

@thomas @gmoney I hope he is the hitter we need but he is 27 y/o rookie where has he been?  I say keep playing him, Jlag, and give Flores a shot.
