Niese is coming off a strong start in which he earned the win against the Brewers when he allowed two runs in six innings. Niese has now pitched six innings or more in 18 consecutive starts, and his 2.96 ERA since June 1 is the seventh best in the National League over that span. Niese is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts against the Marlins this season.
Jacob Turner (1-2, 3.75 ERA) will start for the Marlins tonight.
Turner is making his eighth start of the year tonight, and his fifth since he was acquired from the Tigers in July. Turner is averaging a shade over five innings per start and has allowed eight home runs in only 36 1/3 innings this season. Turner is making his first career appearance against the Mets tonight.
Michael Baron, MetsBlog.com:Niese is undoubtedly a rare bright start in an otherwise dismal end to this season. He has come a long way this season – he has learned to pitch efficiently and when his stuff isn’t in top form which in turn has helped him manage crooked innings, especially since June. He’s getting himself deeper into games and, at the very least, giving his team a good chance to win every time he takes the mound.
