Watch: Noah Syndergaard, Mets Minor League Report

Last month, MiLB.com prospect guru Jonathan Mayo listed 20-year-old Mets RHP prospect Noah Syndergaard among his Top 10 Right-Handed Pitching Prospects for 2013.

Syndergaard was acquired with Travis d’Arnaud in the deal that sent R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays.

In regards to Syndergaard, who checks in at No. 10 on this year’s list, Mayo says: ”He could end up being the best player in the deal, though it may take more time for him to develop.” Mayo told MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone in December that Syndergaard is ahead of where Zack Wheeler at a similar age.

Mets minor league pitching coordinator Ron Romanick likened Syndergaard to Aaron Harang, in terms of his delivery and size on the mound.

Video Q&A with Cory Mazzoni, who’s off to a nice start this spring

Yesterday, 23-year-old Mets RHP Cory Mazzoni pitched three perfect innings against the Marlins, increasing his total to five shutout innings in two Grapefruit League appearances this Spring.

“He’s been everything I’ve heard about him,” manager Terry Collins said after the game, according to MLB.com. “I was certainly anxious to see him. He’s been very impressive.”

In his first time pitching at Double-A, Mazzoni was 5-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 14 starts last season, during which he walked 20 and struck out 56 in 80 innings.

Mazzoni has mostly appeared in the 10-20 range of this year’s top prospect lists for the organization. In talking to people in St. Lucie, it’s clear the Mets like him. He got to Double-A in his first year of professional baseball, which is impressive. He has a a strong fastball, good command and he mixes his pitches well. It sounds to me like he could quickly become a good back-of-the-rotation starter or be very useful in the bullpen. But, I’m told to watch his full season this year. The Mets don’t want to rush him and he’ll continue to work as a starter. Last year, he advanced, but faded, probably because of the long season. So, this year will go a long way in to determining his long-term path.
