Mets sign Bobby Abreu to minor league deal

Four days after granting Bobby Abreu a release, the Mets signed the outfielder to a minor league deal Thursday and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Mets designated Abreu for assignment on August 5 and granted him his release last Sunday.

Abreu, 40, is expected to provide depth in the minors until major league rosters expand in September.

Abreu hit .238 with one homer and 14 RBI in 122 at-bats this season before being designated for assignment.

I thought the same thing...this made no sense to me...then i thought some more. It's a minor league contract. By tomorrow no one will care. Sept 1st on the other hand...he now might be coming up when the rosters expand. Then we'll have the right to say WTF?

I've seen him flip kids off for hecklin him at a mets/phillies game... The guy will just always be a scumbag to me haha

This makes sense as Vegas heads into the playoffs after losing denDecker who was leading the league in hitting. I doubt this has anything to do with the Mets and everything to do with the 51's.

And if he can help the kids, seeing as he was a great hitter, then he's welcomed with open arms. Who cares who he used to play for.

It's a minor league deal. So with the complaining already.

Abreu. Again. Feels like 'Groundhog Day'.   I thought I was reading an old story somehow but, no.  My only concern here is that TC will indulge his itchy trigger finger and insert Abreu in the lineup, thereby ending the extended tryout of denDekker.  Terry, for chrissake, let these young guys play. denDekker is not a young pheenom  anymore. Got to find out If he can play NOW.

There hasn't yet been official word about Chris Young. Let's just hope the Mets don't do the same with him. I can live with them bringing back Abreu if it's in a mentor/coach role and not to eat up any more playing time.

Just so they don't have to play Cesar Puello in AAA. Why do they hate him?

as long as he does not get on the 40 man roster what does it matter. I am fine he is there . He has alot to offer he is a emergency call up if we need that . I could care less that he is back in our system. lets not make more of it then it should he offers alot more then Chris Young did as a Met.

I heard someone hit the reason dead one why the Mets did this, because they still have to continue to fill out a Minor League Roster.

WHY!!!!????He is a useless old man....

Unless they're thinking of keeping him around as a hitting coach for next year - him taking any at-bats from the kids is criminal.

Rumor has it that BA was re-signed because he is going to be the new AAA manager/player. It's just a matter of time before TC is fired with Wally taking over.

He's a good bench player especially for a playoff team.  The problem why he didn't succeed was because Collins over exposed him playing him as a regular.  The man is 40 and cannot play everyday his skills have slowed down.  Once again T.C. idiotic decision

Player / coach and AAA depth in case of an injury. I liked what Abreu showed early in the season. He still has bat speed and could hit with power to all fields. Wonder what influence he had on Duda's evolution this season.

I'm puzzled by all of the negativity heaped on this guy. He is towards the end of a great career and might be able to help the Mets as. Roving hitting instructor.

Really? Again? I guess we forgot he used to be a met killer wit Pat Burrell and the phillies... Let this loser go

The guy must really want to play baseball.  He's made over $100 million playing the game and he still is ready to go the non-luxury minor-league route.

Bobby was good for the young players and would make a great coach someday. Please help Puello be a better player and get him on the right track Bobby.

@Keith Allen-Verdi I don't understand how you don't understand this move.  He can help mentor kids in AAA and give some organizational depth.  I do worry what happens if he gets called up in September if TC will end up starting him for 20 games, but putting him in AAA makes perfect sense.

Mike Herrington

@Keith Allen-Verdi I have less than 1 but let me try anyway.

It is not what Bobby brings onto the field himself. It is more about what Bobby will bring to the other young players around him. For instance, I hope he will works with Puello. I hope Puello listens to Bobby as well.

@ponzies86 The young guys worth their salt are getting called up in 2 weeks.  Did you even read the blurb ?

@rico @ponzies86 The AAA season is over on 8/31.  They have 17 games left.

And there aren't going to be any young guys getting called up, because there really aren't many left in AAA at this point.  I would expect to see Brown, Satin, Teagarden, Germen and Abreu.

Eric Ohlson

Don't get it. If they released him, why bring him back? Makes no sense to give him playing time majors or minors . I do like the Wally managing theory though.

@jamets @ponzies86 who is he going to impede the progress of?

don't know why this thing auto corrects into different words like "doug"

Hey Jeff Francouer just got cut and resigned to AAA by the Padres and he pretty much always stunk. Chone Figgins was cut today too.
